How the interviewer got the job in the first place is the question

It's the same for me, but to make them indicative of their nation's people is just as ignorant.

Well I haven't actually done that.

Like I said, guru murthy had a difficult /awkward guest the American was being a div. Two different circumstances. I'm sure you'll continue to blur the lines and try to claim they are the same though.

They both made mistakes, they both kept making them worse. My opinion they did something stupid before and during the interview. It's the same for me, but to make them indicative of their nation's people is just as ignorant.

Awkward and difficult don't have to mean the same in that context. I can see how they might, so maybe we are just defining things differently so I apologise if that is the case.

An awkward interviewee could be someone who , because they are nervous or don't come off on tv well, just make getting a decent answer almost impossible.

A difficult interviewee (not a difficult interview) is one who makes life difficult for the interviewer with intent. Ayoade was in control of the interview, for the most part, so there was nothing awkward about it, from an interviewee point of view.

Why amusing?

The difference was murthy was aware it was going wrong.

The yank had no idea how much of a twat he was making himself look, in fact so confident was he, he was actually giving Ireland the advice to sort it out!

By the way, awkward and difficult are interchangeable in the context of an interviewee. Amusing that you thought it appropriate to correct me on that point.

Things went wrong and he dug himself deeper.

Having been on live TV during a short and unsuccessful (and very local) political career, I can assuredly say that even if you prepare well, things don't always go well.

I 'd like to think the Sherman is taking the piss. Its unlikely but in this case I'd love the Irish to be cunted in this manner.

What was Guru Murphy going on about about other black people in TV. What the fuck was he trying to get at? PC bollocks as per Channel Four news.

But Guru-Muthy was, which was my point.

Also easy to say that in hindsight but if it was your job and someone told you to get out do it you might think twice about saying no.

But I agree it was a stupid thing to do, doesn't make him stupid overall or everyone from his nation stupid when people from all nations make mistakes like this all the time, some of which are caught on live television.

Re: Who says American newsreaders are ignorant!
"could make you look pretty stupid if you agreed to do a live interview on the subject and just kept talking"

The difference is that Im not stupid enough to do that. It shows enormous ignorance and arrogance to waffle on like that in the face of someone. The Irish fellow should have askd him why the US doesnt still use the pound. That might have gave the wally some perspective.

That is not all Guru-Murthy did wrong but to me even if it was they are exactly then same.

He works for an organization that is suppose to know how to interview someone. Part of that process is doing prep. for the interview.

That is necessary because we all have (often strange) holes in our knowledge. I bet Joe Kernan knows a lot more about cancer research than you do and could make you look pretty stupid if you agreed to do a live interview on the subject and just kept talking.

The fact he was in that situation and keep talking when he was out of his depth was his mistake. Making it an indication of something systemic about Americans is pretty silly.

Re: Who says American newsreaders are ignorant!
not knowing much about someone's book is a somewhat different thing that not knowing about world politics and economics. Especially if you work for an organisation that purports to know about exactly that.

Your opinion.

Ayoade wasn't being awkward, he was being difficult. It is what he does. Something Guru-Murthy should have known might be coming as that is his job if he was going to interview Ayoade.

Neither of them prepared well enough. And both made it worse one they made initial mistakes.

BBC readers carrying around paper reams as if they were an ipod, does not make them thick either.

Guru-Murthy went to Oxford and this guy got a masters from MIT among other degrees, I am willing go out on a limb and say they are not stupid. Both didn't know what they were doing in a specific moment on live television.

Not the same at all. The American showed total ignorance about a subject he should know better about.

Guru Murfy was trying to deal with an awkward interviewee.

Re: Who says American newsreaders are ignorant!
Some perspective, taken insolation, Krishnan Guru-Murthy's interview with Richard Ayoade makes him look like a bit of bumbling idiot. He's not.

I don't think he prepared well enough, if he did, he would have known what Ayoade was probably going to do. He also managed to dig himself deeper during the interview. Pretty similar to what the American guy did and didn't do.

There is no indication that the writer of the mirror story believed it was actually true!

Re: Who says American newsreaders are ignorant!
Could you imagine if a BBC newsreader professed live on air that he thought Americans and Candians were the same country and thought they both used the US Dollar?

At first it seems a winduup but he genuinely is that thick. Does the broadcaster not feel a little ashamed to employ someone that thick? (And he isnt ignorant - he is thick)

What about the drivel in the Mirror about an Islamist terrorist like the White Widow fighting for the Ukrainian army?

Of course ignorance is to be found everywhere, but very few newscasters broadcast their stupidity quite so readily as this bloke.

This really was a case where he should have kept his mouth shut and let people think he was thick, rather than spoken out loud and confirmed it.

A quick Google of passport stats indicates that 46% of US citizens have passports while the figure is just over 70% for UK citizens.

Not that the absence of a passport contributes to stupidity or ignorance.

Re: Who says American newsreaders are ignorant!
Having lived around the world I can assure you ignorance and stupidity are universal. I know I have them both...

I have lived in America, Fort Worth, Texas to be more precise for nearly the last 10 years, but did spend 35 yrs following West Ham home and away from 1970 on.

I live and work among many many American's who are, believe it or not, educated, well traveled, understand the difference between the UK and Ireland, (although no need why they would focus on the difference of those countries as opposed say Brazil and Honduras, or two other disparate countries you could name).

The percentages are the same everywhere, as stated by Irons of Canada, stupidity, ignorance etc etc, but I will avail you of one fact. The percentage of American's that have passports is the same as the percentage of British people who have them. I know as I checked Govt. web sites a couple of years ago as I was curious to this often repeated statistic.
